IT Management Pitfalls
Information technology is an important and growing field. Because this field is susceptible to rapid changes, there are many IT Management pitfalls. One of the biggest ones is thinking that the management knows everything. Technology is constantly changing. Each company is looking for ways to develop and grow. It is important to not only be knowledgeable about the products being made, but also looking for new technologies being developed.
Another major pitfall is failing to recognize new opportunities. While some companies may worry about spreading themselves too thin, it is important to have a hand in new product development. The size of the company will determine how much of a company’s resources can be used in this area, but approving a new project will reap more rewards generally. Of course there is some risk involved in all new opportunities, and it is important to moderate risk taking. However, taking on some risky ventures is advisable, if the company can survive in case those opportunities turn out to be losses for the company.
Other major pitfalls are hiring inexperienced executives. In the information and technology field, it is important to hire those with information in those fields. While it may be tempting to hire those with management experience, try to have a mixture of both, and if at all possible, make sure that all the management knows the basics of technology. This knowledge will help to create a stronger business. However, experience is not enough. It is just as important to hire those who will fit well with the company’s goals and work environment. In a fast paced field, an employee who can work well with pressure is a valuable asset. Hiring a person with those attributes, even though they may be lacking some knowledge, can be a good idea as the knowledge can be learned.
